The snow continues…

Sorry guys, couldn’t help myself – I’m just so excited! Another photo taken at 11.50am today.

Look out for tomorrow’s post which will hopefully be even whiter…

And finally it falls…

The snow falls in Echoland, Hakuba

The snow is here! Beautiful, soft, fluffy, BIG flakes! And they just keep coming. Each time I look out the window, the flakes are bigger. This photo was taken at about 11.20am today on the main street of Echoland and even 20 minutes later as I post this, the ground is turning white. If this keeps up, surely it won’t be long until some lifts open. Will keep you posted…

Tokyo to Nagano is easy on the shinkansen!

The bullet train - Tokyo to Nagano

Shinkansen – Tokyo to Nagano

The main cities of Japan’s main island Honshu are connected by a network of high speed trains called ‘shinkansen’ (bullet trains). The train operating between Tokyo and Nagano is the ‘Asama’ which runs more or less every half hour from Tokyo during winter. Look out for the ‘shinkansen’ signs at Tokyo station to buy your ticket. The train takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes to Nagano and provides some pretty spectacular scenery. I loved the first part of the journey coming out of Tokyo seeing the housing styles change, and an abundance of golf driving ranges! Keep your camera at the ready on the platform while waiting for your train, to catch a snap of a shinkansen on the move (albeit not quite at max speed!). Once you arrive at Nagano, pop downstairs to catch a bus to Hakuba where the White Horse Hotels will pick you up.

Hakuba today

Hakuba

Magnificent Hakuba Mountains

A beautiful day today here in the Japanese Alps. A little more fresh snow on the mountains, blue skies with some clouds scattered throgh the valley. The icy chill stayed in the air for the day. Winter is certainly upon us now. All we need is the  big storm that comes through and turns the whole valley into our snow playground. That can basically happen anytime from now. I’ll be sure to keep everybody posted.

Wine tasting Japan

Wine in Japan

We will have a great selection of wines in Hakuba this year.

If you are in or around Hakuba on the 23rd of November we will have our annual wine tasting and this time we have included a wine appreciation seminar. Lots of wines from Oz, NZ, USA and South America. A great chance to learn a little more and taste a lot. I think it is a good thing for all the restaurants in Hakuba to increase their knowledge of wines so that we can all offer a better experience for our patrons. (Or is it just another excuse to drink?) Either way it should be a fun day.

Fugu in Hakuba

Fugu

When you want to try some fugu make sure the sushi chef has a licence to serve

Fugu is the Japanese word for pufferfish and the dish prepared from it Fugu can be lethally poisonous due to its tetrodotoxin, therefore it has to be carefully prepared to remove  toxic parts and to avoid contaminating the meat. The restaurant preparation of fugu is strictly controlled by the law in Japan and only chefs who have qualified through rigorous training are allowed to deal with the fish. Domestic preparation however occasionally leads to accidental death. If a death occurs through the wrong preparation by a chef then he is meant to commit hari-kiri for his misdemeanor however the sushi chefs in Hakuba have told me they won’t. They have also told me they have never lost one customer, yet.

There is a story that tells of three men who prepared a fugu stew but were unsure whether it was safe to eat. To test the stew, they gave some to a beggar. When it did not seem to do him any harm, they ate the stew. Later, they met the beggar again and were delighted to see that he was still in good health. After that encounter, the beggar, who had hidden the stew instead of eating it, knew that it was safe and he could eat it. The three men had been fooled by the wise beggar.

Snow to the base

first snow

Last night we saw snow to the valley floor in Hakuba

It’s always a big moment when it snows outside your window for the first time each season. Last night we had our first snowfalls down in Echoland. It didn’t stick to the ground but it was coming down so the buzz of anticipation around Hakuba grows even more. Bookings for all the hotels are coming in strong so if you are thinking of a ski / snowboard holiday in Japan this year shoot through an email to tony@whitehorse-hakuba.com

Omachi

Omachi

A few steps and you could be flying from here.

A great day to go for a drive down to Omachi. We had some friends come up to Hakuba so we decided to go for a lazy Sunday afternoon drive. Omachi is a town about 20 minutes south of Hakuba along the main Highway. We decided to take the long way going up through the Kashimayari ski resort and along the ridge line. The views were spectacular. The spot where the above photo was taken is used by the paragliders to launch themselves off. Another superb day in Hakuba finished off with a stroll down to the main Echoland strip to my favourite izakaya. Great friends good food and clean mountain air. What more can you ask for.
